Systemic Drowning Prevention (2023, Perth)

Anyone who plans a new drowning prevention action has to consider multiple interacting factors. Because drowning is such a complex problem, we need a framework to help practitioners and research think about this problem in a structured way, and to share the same terminology. We present a framework, based on systems theory, that answers this call.

Drowning Prevention and Rescue Curriculum (2023, Perth)

In Switzerland, minimum qualifications for the prevention, early detection and treatment (incl. rescue) of drowning accidents are prescribed for the practicing of various functions/jobs in, on and around water bodies. Be it as a standard or as a legal regulation.

The Swiss Lifesaving Society coordinates a national modular education and training system to obtain and maintain all these qualifications.

In order to enable a better coordination between all stakeholders, the SLRG has developed a curriculum using the competency-resource model (CoReModel) (1). A “competence” is considered as the ability to successfully face a set of situations. Required resources are categorized into declarative knowledge, procedural knowledge and attitudes.

Using Do-it-yourself (DIY) manikins to teach resuscitation skills (2023, Perth)

Around the world, access to CPR education for laypeople is still a big issue. During COVID, many people independently built DIY manikins to practice CPR in the home, which may be a solution that can remove different barriers to CPR education. In this presentation, we discuss a project that aims to open up a dialog about DIY manikins for CPR: evaluating its evidence base, mapping future research priorities, and thinking about how this idea can be carried out to the world.
